9-PIN Green to Black Adapter — PACCAR Trucks

Your truck has a green 9-pin port. Your ELD cable has a black 9-pin plug. They don't fit. This adapter fixes that.

In 2017 PACCAR switched Peterbilt and Kenworth trucks to the green J1939 Type II diagnostic connector. The pins are a smaller diameter than the older black Type I connector, so a standard black 9-pin ELD cable physically won't seat in a green port. This adapter bridges the two so you can keep using your existing cable.

What it does

  • Green to black conversion — plugs into your truck's green J1939 Type II port and accepts your standard black 9-pin ELD cable.
  • Keeps your existing cable — no need to replace your ELD harness when you change trucks.
  • Plug-and-play — hand-tightens into place in seconds. No tools, no wiring, no shop visit.
  • Deutsch-style connectors — over-molded, locking, built for vibration and temperature swings on the road.

Fits

  • Peterbilt 2017-2018 with PACCAR engines
  • Kenworth 2017-2018 with PACCAR engines
  • Other trucks with a green 9-pin J1939 Type II diagnostic port

Do I need this adapter?

Look at your diagnostic port. If it's green, you need this adapter to use a black 9-pin cable. If it's black, you don't — order the 9-PIN Cable instead.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between the green and black 9-pin connectors?
Both are 9-pin J1939 diagnostic connectors, but the green Type II connector uses smaller-diameter pins and carries a faster 500k CAN datalink. PACCAR moved Peterbilt and Kenworth to green starting in 2017. The two are not mechanically interchangeable without an adapter.

Do I still need my 9-pin cable?
Yes. This is an adapter, not a cable. It goes between your truck's green port and your existing black 9-pin ELD cable.

Will this work on trucks newer than 2018?
It fits any truck with a green 9-pin J1939 Type II port. Note that many 2018+ heavy-duty trucks also have a 14-pin RP1226 port — if yours does, our 14-PIN RP1226 Cable is often the cleaner install.

Does it need tools to install?
No. It threads on by hand in a few seconds.
